Molin STEM Showcase Event Details!

Hello Student Scientists/Engineers, and Families,
 
Your Molin STEM Showcase is set to be held March 2nd, and everyone is excited to come together to learn about your discoveries!
 
DETAILS AND SCHEDULING INFORMATION
Simple, yet important, information you need to know:
 
Event Overview:
Place: Molin School Cafeteria; Enter through front doors on Low Street and follow signs to the designated cafeteria entrance.
  • Setup: Wednesday, March 1st, 4:30-6:30pm
  • School Day Event: Thursday, March 2nd during half-day school hours Molin School for students, faculty and staff and visiting scientists
  • Family Viewing Evening: Thursday, March 2nd, 6:00-7:15pm
Wednesday, March 1st Details:
Time: Setup is 4:30-6:30pm 
Check-in and Set-up:
  • Completed board and materials are to be brought to the cafeteria.
  • Each project board header panel should note on the header-board back: Student(s) name(s), teacher(s), and project number.
  • At least one student and parent from a project team must come to set up the group's project.
  • Students will be presented with their t-shirts at the cafeteria entrance, and be directed to their tables for setup.
  • Volunteers will be on duty to assist the students.
  • If you have requested electricity, you have been assigned a table near a power source. Please bring an extension cord/power strip, if necessary, given your project.
  • Valuable items need not be brought for setup. Students should bring them to school the morning of March 2nd.
Thursday, March 2nd Details - STEM Showcase School Day Details:
  • March 2nd Half Day
  • The morning of the fair, all student scientists are asked to WEAR THEIR T-SHIRTS.
  • All students first report to their classrooms upon arrival at school. Teachers announce when students report to the cafeteria.
  • Student scientists need to bring a nut-free snack.
  • Student scientists will be visited by their teachers, students who did not put together projects this year, and visiting scientists. They should be prepared to stay at their displays and answer questions about their projects, but they will have opportunities to circulate to see the other projects and engage in STEM activities.
  • At the end of the morning, students must bring home valuable items. The display boards and general display items remain in place for the evening showing. 
Thursday, March 2nd Details - STEM Showcase Family Evening Details:
  • March 2nd, 6:00-7:15pm
  • During viewing times, student scientists should stand with their projects to present and answer questions. Visiting family members, please make an effort to view other children's projects and circulate.
  • At the end of the evening, all displays must be disassembled and all components must be brought home.
 
Regulations Reminder:
As a final reminder, in the interest of everyone's health and safety, the following are not allowed:
  1. Foul smelling items
  2. Extremely loud sounds
  3. Requires a hot plate and/or boiling water or microwave
  4. Contains dangerous chemicals
  5. Requires the use of dangerous machinery or tools
  6. Contains materials that are potential allergens
  7. Contains any type of explosion
  8. Requires a fog machine
  9. Contains latex (no latex balloons or gloves)
  10. Involves projectiles
  11. Require live animals or insects to be brought to the school - Absolutely no live animals or insects allowed

You’ve learned about the Scientific Method in the classroom.

You’ve even come up with a scientific question that YOU find interesting!

Now, put this knowledge to use and run the experiment that YOU choose!


Present your Project at the Showcase on March 2nd at the Molin Upper Elementary School

Important Dates


Bring home your Scientific Question and finalize your Experiment

  • January 9-February 3  (Students who participated in STEM class first semester will bring home their scientific questions on January 9th. Students starting second semester STEM class on January 23rd will bring home their questions on approximately February 3rd.)


Register your Project

  • February 3-February 10  An adult caregiver can go to http://newburyportpto.com/stem to register your project information stating February 3, but, please, no later than February 10.  (Any pairs must register together under one project entry.)


Experiment - Collect Data - Test (suggested timeframe)

  • February 10-February 28th  You have already completed some of your project in STEM class.  Now it’s time to perform your experiment.  The more times you perform the experiment the better your data will be.


Pick Up your Display Board & Report your Materials

*(DATE CHANGE) Thursday, February 16th  - Outside the Nock Auditorium -  2:30-3:30 PM OR 6:00-7:00 PM

Please submit your materials list when you come to pick up your board.


Complete your Project and Prepare to Display and Present at the Showcase

  • February 10-March 1

Finish up the steps in the scientific method. Then, create your presentation. Show your question on your header board and summarize each of the steps from the method on the display. Include photos or other items, too. You can also display items on your table in front of your presentation board. (Be sure to abide by the Rules & Regulations, so that your complete project is allowed at the Showcase.)  


Project Setup in School Cafeteria – March 1, 4:30-6:30PM

Come to school with your completed board and materials for setup from 4:30-6:30PM.


STEM Showcase – March 2 (Half Day of School and in the Evening)

Students’ In-School Viewing Time & STEM Activities during school half day hours.  

Family Viewing Evening: 6:00-7:15pm.  (Students are to bring home projects at the end of the night)

RULES & REGULATIONS


For safety and health reasons, certain items will not be permitted at School. Projects need modification if they include any of the following:


1. Foul smelling items

2. Extremely loud sounds

3. Requires a hot plate and/or boiling water or microwave

4. Contains dangerous chemicals

5. Requires the use of dangerous machinery or tools

6. Contains materials that are potential allergens

7. Contains any type of explosion

8. Requires a fog machine

9. Contains latex (no latex balloons or gloves)

10. Involves projectiles

11. Require live animals or insects to be brought to the school - Absolutely no live animals or insects

     Allowed.

12. Involves selling or giving out items



Groups of 1-4 students may work on a project.


Information to have ready for Registration:


1. Project scientific question and basic description

2. Student(s) first & last names and t-shirt sizes

3. Caregiver(s) first & last names, email addresses and emergency phone info
